Find out about RSS Feeds

What is an RSS Feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, an XML file that can be read by software or a web service.

You no longer need to remember to revisit a site to check for updates. RSS feeds deliver information and news from your favourite websites, blogs and podcasts as they are updated.

How to get Started with RSS

To receive RSS feeds you need software called a feed reader or aggregator.

An RSS Reader allows you to subscribe to content of interest to you so you can:

  • view information as it is published, e.g. news, blogs, podcasts
  • organise your feeds, e.g. by subject (create different folders)
  • display and keep up to date with latest information
  • participate in discussions through blogs.

Some RSS readers are web-based others you need to download a small software program onto your desktop. Most are free to use.

Choosing an RSS Reader

There are many different feed reading applications to choose from.

EdNA Online provides a list of selected feed readers.

Once you have chosen an RSS reader you will now be able to subscribe to the feeds.

Subscribing to RSS Feeds

To subscribe to a feed you can:

  • Right click on the RSS icon on the page of the feed you are subscribing to
  • Copy the Location (URL) of the service
  • Paste the Location into the channel of the RSS Reader by following the instructions in that application.
